Plant Nanny Primer
A Plant Nanny puts your watering schedule on cruise control. The terra cotta stake reacts to the level of moisture in the soil, ensuring an even trickle for as long as water remains in the globe. Make sure that your soil starts out relatively wet to prevent the Plant Nanny from disgorging its entire water supply in an attempt to moisten dry soil. An ideal scenario: water a plant shortly before leaving on vacation, then stick in a Plant Nanny to maintain damp soil during your absence.
A cautionary word: Plant Nannies operate best in soil that is dense enough to hold water, i.e. soil that remains moist over a period of time. Water passes through light or sandy soil quickly, and you may find that your Plant Nanny has dumped its reserves down the drain rather than releasing them over time as you intended.
